Microsoft released December's Security Bulletins on 12/1/04
These included 1 critical and 5 important updates. The critical Security Bulletin MS04-040 is another Cumulative Update to Internet Explorer. It replaces several other IE updates from earlier this year, MS04-038, MS04-025, and MS04-004. It addresses issues where a malicious web page could take complete control of an affected system, including remote code execution. Be sure to visit Windows Update and install the ones recommended for your system.

Microsoft released November's Security Bulletins on 11/9/04
There was only 1 important update this month. The Security Bulletin MS04-039 affects Proxy Server 2.0 and ISA (Internet Security and Acceleration) Server 2000. So most end users are not affected, but most Windows based servers will be. Be sure to visit Windows Update and install the ones recommended for your system.

Another serious Internet Explorer hole has been reported on 11/4/04
The flaw could allow an attacker to take control of a system via a malicous website or an HTML email message. Read more details about the flaw in the eWeek Security Center. The flaw affects IE 6.0 on Windows XP with SP 1 and Windows 2000 systems, it appears XP systems with SP 2 installed are safe.

Microsoft released October's Security Bulletins on 10/12/04
These included 7 critical and 3 important updates. One Security Bulletin from Sept. MS04-028 has been reissued. It addresses JPEG processing (GDI+) and affects Windows XP, Windows Server, and Office products. Be sure to visit Windows Update and install those recommended for your system.

Microsoft released 2 Security Bulletins in September
One MS04-028 is rated critical for Windows XP and Office 2003 it addresses issues with how JPEG graphic files are handled. Read about some of the confusion and complexities of installing this patch. Or go to the SANS Internet Storm Center and download their GDI Scan tool. The second addresses issues with WordPerfect document conversion MS04-027.

Microsoft didn't released any Security Bulletins in August
However they finally released Windows XP Service Pack 2
(We initially cautioned our customers to wait a few days before installing, but now feel it is stable enough for customers to proceed with the install.) Visit Microsoft's page Windows XP SP 2 for all the info. Read about the Windows Firewall, Pop-Up Blocker, and Security Center that are all included in the Service Pack. For some comments from folks that have installed SP 2 read the PC World blogs they estimate that 15% of the upgrades have problems, and read the PC World article on the VPN patch for Service Pack 2. Or visit the M/S Knowledge Base article about programs that have known problems with SP2. Some are security programs that conflict with the Windows Firewall, some multi-player games are affected, instant message programs that use the Internet, and also some client-server based programs. We've also heard about problems with wireless networks after SP 2 installs. And visit Microsoft's What to Know page before installing SP2, specifically they mention cleaning your system of Spyware before the SP 2 install, they include a link to Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE to help you clean your system. They also mention problems with systems that have the TV Media spyware infection. They provide a tool to help you clean your system of that spyware before you install SP 2.
